Overcast Shooting

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Overcast today and the Weather guy says a possibility of light rain.   So far,  so good.  When I’m out shooting on a day like today I usually have a Kata Element Cover (camera rain coat) tucked away somewhere on my person or in my pack.  Always better safe than sorry.

Days like today are a winner for taking pictures outdoors.  There are still some shadows in the scene but the clouds make for a very diffuse light and the shadow detail in the pictures is a lot easier to manage without burning out highlights.  The down side to cloudy day shooting is the sky looks gray and dreary so I usually try to keep it mostly out of the shot unless the composition demands that it be there.   On the other hand,  for outdoor portraits, it doesn’t get any better.  Some slight flash to fill the subject and put catch lights in in the eyes and the percentage of good pictures goes way up.

Welcome to the Blog

We’re trying something new on the Photo Images web site. Yes, I know. Blogs aren’t new…but it’s new to us. This page will be for ongoing thoughts and musings about cameras, lenses, accessories, photography and the photographic process.

Today, the sun is shining and the temperature is supposed to get up near 60 here in upstate NY. There are still no leaves on the trees but the buds are starting to show and it shouldn’t be much longer before it’s time to get out and start shooting.

My kit for roaming in the spring time includes the longest lens I have (currently a Tamron 200-500mm) because as the weather turns nice there are more chances for seeing birds and critters and such. There is lots of talk around the eastern NY area about bald eagles being spotted here, there and everywhere. I actually saw one the other day but he was too far off for me to get any good shots. We just keep on trying. I’m thinking this weekend coming, I may take a little ride up to Sacandaga Lake to see what might be there.
